Black History 365 Sub Plan: Jazz: Improvisation, Innovation, and Black Genius| Middle School Music| 60-Minute Lesson

This Black History 365 one-day sub plan introduces middle school students to jazz as a Black American art form rooted in improvisation, innovation, collaboration, migration, and cultural genius. Students learn how jazz developed in New Orleans, spread during the Great Migration, connected to the Harlem Renaissance, and influenced music around the world.

Designed for a 60-minute class period, this resource requires minimal teacher guidance and is ideal for substitute days, emergency lesson plans, Black History Month, music units, arts integration, social studies, literacy lessons, or year-round culturally responsive instruction.
