This Black History 365 one-day sub plan introduces middle school students to the role of Black music in resistance, survival, and social change. Students learn how spirituals and freedom songs helped Black communities communicate, build unity, preserve identity, and fight for freedom.

Designed for a 60-minute class period, this resource requires minimal teacher guidance and is ideal for substitute days, emergency lesson plans, Black History Month, music history units, Civil Rights Movement units, literacy lessons, social studies lessons, or year-round culturally responsive instruction.
